Surf guiding vs surf lessons — what's the difference, what level do you need, and what does a typical guiding day look like?
Surf guiding is the fastest way to discover the best Sagres has to offer once you can already surf independently. Here's what guests most often ask before booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
What level do I need for a surf guiding session?
Surf guiding is designed for surfers who can already paddle out, catch unbroken (green) waves on their own and ride along the wave face. If you're still in the white-water stage, a structured surf lesson will progress you faster than guiding.
What's the difference between a surf lesson and surf guiding?
A lesson is teaching: technique, drills and pop-up coaching. Guiding is local knowledge: we drive you to the best beach for the day's swell, wind and tide, share the line-up etiquette and give light coaching as needed. You bring the skills, we bring the spot.
What's included in a guiding day?
A typical guiding day includes a morning forecast briefing, transport to the chosen spot in our van, surfboard and wetsuit rental if needed, and 3–4 hours in the water with a local guide who knows every Sagres peak.
Can I bring my own board?
Of course. Most experienced guests prefer their own board. If you fly without one, we have a quiver of performance shortboards, fish, mid-lengths and longboards to choose from.
How many surfers in a guiding group?
We keep guiding groups small — usually 3 to 5 surfers per guide. This keeps the line-up uncrowded and lets us tailor the spot choice to the group's level.
Do you guide in winter?
Yes. Winter is one of the best times for guiding in Sagres — bigger, cleaner swells and almost no crowds. You'll need a 4/3mm wetsuit (rentable from us) and ideally booties on the coldest days.
