Sagres Surf Spots
Every beach we surf, and how to read it
Sagres sits on the corner of the continent, which is the single best thing about surfing here. Within about fifteen minutes' drive you can reach wild, west-facing Atlantic beach breaks and a sheltered south-coast bay — so when one side of the cape is unrideable, the other side usually is not.
These are the five beaches we surf and guide at most. Each guide covers what the wave actually does, the swell and wind that make it work, the tide, the hazards worth knowing about, and honestly who it suits — a couple of them are not places to learn to surf, and we would rather say so.
One rule applies everywhere on this coast: surf the morning. The prevailing northerly wind builds through the day, so a beach that is glassy at 8am is often a mess by early afternoon.

Reading a forecast and matching it to the right beach is most of what a surf guide does. On a guided day we check the charts, drive you to whichever spot is working, and put you in the right part of the lineup.
