Thinking about catching your first wave in the Algarve? Here's everything a beginner needs to know about learning to surf in Sagres, Portugal.
Sagres is one of the easiest places in Europe to learn how to surf. With consistent waves all year round, multiple beaches with sandy bottoms, and a relaxed surf culture, the south-western tip of the Algarve is a beginner-friendly playground.
At FreeRide Surf School, we have been teaching first-time surfers in Sagres since 2002 — so we know exactly what works and what doesn't when you're starting out.
Why Sagres is perfect for beginners
The geography of Sagres is a huge advantage. We have beaches facing west (catching every Atlantic swell) and beaches facing south (sheltered, smaller waves). That means our instructors can choose the calmest, safest beach for your level on the day of your lesson.
Praia da Mareta and Praia do Martinhal on the south coast are ideal on bigger swell days. On calmer days we head to Praia da Cordoama, our home beach, where small white-water waves roll gently across a long sandy bottom — perfect for your first pop-up.
What to expect from your first surf lesson
A typical beginner lesson at FreeRide lasts around 2 hours and includes a beach briefing, warm-up, technique drills (paddling, pop-up, stance) and plenty of time in the water with your instructor.
We provide everything: a soft-top beginner board, a 4/3mm wetsuit, transport from our Sagres meeting point and full insurance. You just need a swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen and water.
Most students stand up and ride a wave on their very first lesson. By the end of a 3-day course you'll be surfing green waves on your own.
How long does it take to learn to surf?
Surfing has a steep learning curve at the start. Three to five lessons in one week is usually enough to get the basics: paddling out, popping up, riding straight and turning. Becoming an independent intermediate surfer typically takes a season of consistent practice.
Our 3-lesson and 5-lesson packages are designed exactly around this progression — and the savings versus a single lesson are significant.
