Who Advanced Coaching Is For
There is a stage most surfers reach and then sit in for years. You can paddle out on your own, read a forecast well enough to turn up on a decent day, catch unbroken waves and ride along the face. And then nothing much changes for three seasons. More surf trips, same surfing.
That plateau is almost never about wave count. It is about repeating the same handful of habits — sitting a metre too deep, standing up a beat late, turning from the shoulders instead of the feet — thousands of times until they feel like your style. You cannot see them from the inside, which is exactly why a coached week with video moves people who have not improved in years.
If you are still catching whitewater or getting to your feet inconsistently, this is not the right week for you and we will tell you so. Our surf lessons will move you forward faster and for less money. Coaching is for surfers who already surf and want to surf properly.
How a Coaching Day Runs
Morning
Conditions call, then surf
The day starts with the forecast rather than the clock. Sagres sits on a corner: when the west coast at Cordoama or Castelejo is oversized or blown out, Mareta on the south side is often clean and rideable, and vice versa. Your coach picks the beach that gives you the best chance of quality repetitions, and explains why — reading conditions is half of what separates an intermediate from an advanced surfer.
In the water
Filmed sessions with a focus
Each session has one or two specific goals, not a general 'go surfing'. Take-off timing, bottom-turn compression, rail engagement, positioning on the peak. Your coach films from the beach or the water so there is objective footage to work from instead of a memory of how it felt.
Afternoon
Video analysis
This is where a coaching week earns its keep. Reviewing your own footage frame by frame next to a reference clip is the fastest way to close the gap between what you think you are doing and what you are actually doing. Most surfers who plateau are repeating one habit thousands of times; video finds it in an afternoon.
Recovery & land training
Surf skate, mobility and recovery
Surf skate sessions drill the same rail-to-rail movement on land, where you get hundreds of repetitions per hour instead of a handful per session. Yoga, mobility and breathing work keeps you surfing five days in a row rather than seizing up on day three, and the ice bath and sauna sessions are there for the same reason.
Why Sagres Works for a Coaching Week
A fixed coaching week only works if you can surf every day of it, and that is a geography problem before it is a coaching problem. Sagres sits on the south-western corner of Europe with beaches facing two different directions within a fifteen-minute drive. When a big north-west swell shuts down the west coast, Mareta on the south side is often clean and workable. When the west coast is small and glassy, Cordoama and Castelejo deliver.
For intermediate surfers that variety is worth more than any single famous wave. Beliche and Tonel give you punchier, more critical takeoffs when you are ready to be pushed; the softer beach breaks give you the volume of waves that technical change actually requires. Full detail on every beach is in our Sagres surf guide.
Autumn is the season we would point most coaching guests towards: September to November brings consistent Atlantic groundswell, water still warm enough for a 3/2, and the August crowds gone from the peaks.
Advanced Coaching Questions
What level do I need to be for advanced surf coaching?
Advanced coaching is aimed at intermediate surfers and upwards — if you can paddle out on your own, catch unbroken waves and ride along the face, you will get value from it. If you are still catching whitewater or standing up inconsistently, our regular surf lessons will move you forward faster, and we will say so rather than sell you the wrong week.
How is coaching different from a surf lesson?
A lesson teaches you to surf. Coaching diagnoses why you have stopped improving. The structure is different too: sessions are filmed, reviewed on video, and built around specific technical goals across the week, with land training and recovery scheduled around them so you can surf five days in a row.
When is the best time of year for a coaching week in Sagres?
September through November is the sweet spot for intermediate surfers: consistent Atlantic groundswell, water still warm enough for a 3/2 wetsuit, and far fewer people on the peaks than in August. Winter brings the biggest and most powerful swells and suits confident surfers. Late spring is a good middle ground.
Where do the coaching sessions take place?
Around Sagres and Vila do Bispo. Tonel and Beliche on the west side, Mareta on the sheltered south side, and Cordoama or Castelejo when the swell suits them. Having both coasts within a short drive is the reason Sagres works so well for a fixed coaching week — there is almost always somewhere surfable.
How many people are in a coaching group?
Small groups or one-to-one. Video analysis and individual feedback only work if the coach has time for each surfer, so groups are kept deliberately small. Tell us what you want to work on when you enquire and we will tell you which format fits.
