Frequently Asked Questions
How many lessons does it take to learn to surf?
Most beginners ride their first white-water wave in their very first lesson — sometimes within the first 30–60 minutes. If your goal is to ride green waves and feel confident in the water, most people reach this stage after around 10–15 lessons combined with regular practice.
What kind of board will I use?
Beginners are almost always given a 'foamie' (soft-top board), which is safer, more buoyant, and easier to stand on — usually 8 to 9 feet long.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You don't need to be an athlete, but you should feel comfortable in the ocean. All lessons take place in carefully chosen conditions suited to your level, and you'll always be supervised by certified instructors. We start in shallow water and progress gradually.
What should I bring to my lesson?
Just bring swimwear (to wear under your wetsuit), a towel, sunscreen, water, and a positive mindset. We provide everything else: surfboard, wetsuit, professional instruction, and safety briefing.
What happens if the conditions aren't good?
Your safety and experience always come first. If conditions aren't suitable, we adapt — this might mean changing surf spot, adjusting lesson time, or rescheduling if necessary. The ocean sets the rhythm — flexibility is part of the journey.
Is surfing safe for children?
Yes — when taught properly. Children's lessons are adapted to their age, size, and confidence level, always in gentle conditions with close supervision. Surfing helps kids build balance, resilience, ocean awareness, and self-confidence.
What if I'm nervous?
That's completely natural. Our teaching approach is calm, supportive, and pressure-free. We move at your pace, explain everything clearly, and celebrate small wins. Many students arrive unsure and leave smiling, proud, and already planning their next session.
Am I too old to start surfing?
Absolutely not. Many people begin surfing in their 50s, 60s — and even later. With supportive coaching, suitable equipment, and calm waves, surfing can be adapted to every stage of life. You don't have to be fearless or super fit — just curious.
Can I learn to surf in 2 weeks?
Yes — two weeks is a great amount of time to build a strong foundation. With regular lessons, most people can ride white-water waves confidently, practise paddling with ease, and begin exploring small green waves. Think of it as the beginning of your surfing journey.
Packages vs Private Sessions — what's the difference?
Packages combine multiple group sessions at a reduced price — great for social learners and building consistency. Private sessions offer fully tailored 1:1 coaching for faster progression. Many surfers start with a package and add a private lesson to refine technique.
Can I book for a group of friends?
Absolutely! We love welcoming groups. Whether you're celebrating, team-building, or just travelling together, we offer group bookings with customised lesson plans to suit your party's size, level, and goals.
How expensive is it to learn to surf?
Learning to surf is more accessible than many expect. Most lessons include everything you need. Beginners usually start with single lessons or small packages, and multi-day courses often offer better value and faster improvement.
