Best Time of Year to Surf in Sagres, Portugal

2 April 2025 5 min read

Sagres has waves 365 days a year — but each season has its own personality. Here's how to choose the right time of year for your surf trip.

One of the questions we get asked most often at FreeRide is: "When is the best time to surf in Sagres?" The honest answer — it depends on your level and what you're after. Here's a season-by-season guide based on 20+ years of running our surf school in the Algarve.

Summer (June – September): warm, mellow, beginner gold

Summer in Sagres means small to medium waves, water temperatures around 18–20°C, long sunny days and a buzzing beach atmosphere. It's the ideal season for first-time surfers, families and anyone who wants to combine surfing with a relaxed beach holiday.

Our beach base at Praia da Cordoama is fully open from June through October — walk-in lessons and rentals available daily.

Autumn (October – November): the locals' favourite

Many surfers (and most of our instructors) consider autumn the best time to surf in Sagres. The Atlantic starts firing consistent groundswells, the water is still warm from summer, and crowds drop dramatically once school starts.

If you're an intermediate surfer looking to level up, October and November are pure gold.

Winter (December – February): power and adventure

Winter brings the biggest, cleanest swells of the year. This is the season for experienced surfers who want pumping waves at spots like Beliche, Tonel and the secret reefs of the west coast.

Water temperatures drop to around 15°C — a 4/3mm wetsuit is essential, and a hood is nice on the coldest days. Our surf guiding service comes into its own here: we know which beach works on each wind and swell direction.

Spring (March – May): the best of both worlds

Spring offers a beautiful mix of leftover winter swell and increasingly clean conditions. Crowds are minimal, the cliffs are covered in wildflowers, and you can often have a beach almost to yourself.

It's a great season for both improving beginners and intermediates looking for variety.
