West of Lagos
Surf Lessons near Lagos & Vila do Bispo
Learn on the Atlantic beaches of the western Algarve with a Sagres surf school that has taught here since 2002.
The Surf Is Out West
If you're staying in Lagos, Luz, Burgau or anywhere along the Vila do Bispo coast and want to learn to surf, the waves you're looking for are mostly to the west. FreeRide Surfing is based in Sagres, at the south-western tip of Europe, and teaches on the beaches of the Vila do Bispo municipality — Cordoama, Castelejo, Tonel, Beliche and Mareta.
We want to be clear about one thing: we don't run lessons in Lagos itself. Our lessons start from our surf centre in Sagres or, in season, from our Beach Hut on Praia da Cordoama. What you get for the drive is a choice of two coastlines, which is why there is a surfable beach for your level almost every day.
Why Surfers Staying in Lagos Drive West
The south coast around Lagos faces away from the Atlantic swell, so on many days it is flat or close to it. The west-facing beaches near Vila do Bispo point straight into that swell. As our Cordoama guide puts it: when the south coast at Lagos is flat, Cordoama will have waves.
Sagres sits on the corner where the two coastlines meet. If the west coast is too big or the north wind is blowing, the south-facing bay at Mareta is often clean. Being able to switch between them within minutes is what makes lessons here so reliable, especially for beginners.
Where Your Lessons Happen
Praia da Cordoama is the beach we know best — a long, cliff-backed beach break west of Vila do Bispo, about 15 minutes from Sagres, with several sandbanks working at once. Our Beach Hut sits right on the sand here from June to November, with rentals, lessons and walk-ins welcome.
Castelejo is its neighbour, five minutes away below black schist cliffs, and a little punchier. Closer to town, Mareta is the sheltered beginner-friendly bay, while Tonel and Beliche suit improving surfers.
Getting to Us From Lagos
Sagres is at the western end of the coast road from Lagos — a drive of roughly 30–40 minutes depending on where you're staying. Meet us at the Freeride Surf Centre at Hotel Memmo Baleeira, Sagres (8650-357), which is open all year round and is where lesson check-in, boards and wetsuits are handled. In season you can also meet us at the Beach Hut on Praia da Cordoama, which is signposted from Vila do Bispo.
Group lessons run in the morning, starting around 09:00–09:30, so allow time for the drive. Once you've checked in, transport to the beach of the day is part of the lesson.
Group or Private?
Group lessons last 2h30 and are fun, social and great value — perfect for first-timers. They're for ages 12 and up, with certified instructors, small groups, all equipment, transport and sports insurance included.
Private lessons last 1h30–2h with a flexible schedule, for 1–5 people, and children are welcome from age 6. They suit families, nervous beginners and intermediates who want technique-focused coaching. See private surf lessons for details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you run surf lessons in Lagos?
No — we're based further west, in Sagres, with a seasonal Beach Hut on Praia da Cordoama near Vila do Bispo. If you're staying in Lagos it's worth the drive: the west-facing beaches here pick up Atlantic swell when the south coast around Lagos is flat.
Where do I meet you for a lesson?
At the Freeride Surf Centre at Hotel Memmo Baleeira in Sagres, open all year, or — from June to November — at our Beach Hut on Praia da Cordoama. Once you've checked in, transport to the beach of the day is included in group and private lessons.
Which beach near Vila do Bispo is best for beginners?
It depends on the day. Cordoama and Castelejo are friendly on small, clean mornings but become powerful on a solid west swell. When the west coast is too big or windy, we move beginners to Mareta, the sheltered south-facing bay in Sagres.
Can I get to you without a car?
Transport between our surf centre and the beach is included, but we don't advertise pick-ups from Lagos. If you're staying there without a car, message us before you book and we'll tell you what's possible for your dates.
What age can kids start?
Group lessons are for ages 12 and up. Private and family lessons are available from age 6, in gentle conditions with close supervision.
