Your Instructor, Your Pace
A private surf lesson puts one of our certified instructors entirely on your side of the wave. Whether it's just you, you and a partner, or your whole family, the session is built around your level, your goals and how you feel in the water on the day.
FreeRide Surfing has been teaching in Sagres since 2002. Our private lessons last 1h30–2h, run on a flexible schedule rather than a fixed morning slot, and include equipment, transport to the beach of the day and sports insurance. It's the fastest way we know to progress — and the most comfortable way to start if you're nervous.
Who Private Lessons Are For
Private lessons work for almost everyone, but they make the biggest difference for three kinds of surfer.

- Intermediate and advanced surfers — technique-focused coaching on positioning, speed and manoeuvres.
What Happens in a Private Session
We start with a welcome and gear fitting, then beach theory, a warm-up and pop-up practice tailored to your level. The heart of the lesson is an extended surf session with continuous feedback — no waiting your turn while the instructor works through a group. We finish with a debrief and tips for progression, so you know exactly what to practise next.
Where we surf depends on the conditions. Sagres has beaches facing two directions, so we can choose between the west coast at spots like Tonel or Cordoama and the sheltered bay at Mareta to find the right waves for you.
Family Private Lessons
Family privates are designed for 3–5 people. Everyone surfs together with one instructor, kids from age 6 can join, and the session is paced for the youngest or most nervous member of the group.

Private vs Group Lessons
Our group lessons last 2h30, start in the morning around 09:00–09:30, are for ages 12 and up and cost from 60€ per person. They're fun, social and great value for first-timers. A private lesson is shorter but fully focused on you, fits your schedule, and is open to younger children.

How much is a private surf lesson in Sagres?
In low season (November to May) a private lesson costs 220€ for 1–2 people, plus 70€ for each extra person. In high season (June to October) it is 300€ for 1–2 people, plus 80€ per extra person. Equipment, transport and sports insurance are included.
How many people can join a private lesson?
Private lessons are available for 1–5 people: one-to-one coaching, or one instructor for your own private group. Family privates work well for 3–5 people.
What is the minimum age for private lessons?
