West & South Coast
Surf Guiding in the Algarve
For independent surfers who want a local to find the best waves of the day.
One Base, Two Coastlines
The Algarve is two very different surf coasts. The long south coast, from Faro to Lagos, faces away from the Atlantic swell and only really comes alive when a big swell wraps in. The west coast faces straight into it and has waves most of the year. Sagres sits exactly on the corner where they meet — which is why we guide from here.
Surf guiding with FreeRide is not a lesson. There is no coaching brief, no drills and no beginner beach. You get a local guide who reads the swell, wind and tide against your level, picks the break, drives you there and keeps an eye on the water with you. It's for surfers who can already paddle out and catch their own waves, and would rather spend their trip surfing than guessing.
Where We Guide in the Algarve
Most days we stay within about 30 minutes of Sagres, which covers both coasts and around a dozen breaks. On the west side that means beach breaks like Cordoama, Castelejo and Amado — the most consistent beach break in the region — plus Tonel and Beliche right by town. On the south side, Mareta is the sheltered option when the north wind is blowing, and Zavial is the best right-hander on the south coast when a big west swell wraps in.
When the swell is unusual we'll drive further, as far as Arrifana or Bordeira on the Costa Vicentina, roughly an hour north — but only if that is genuinely where the best waves are.
How a Guided Session Works
Each guiding session gives you 3 hours with a local guide. Before you paddle out we explain the break, the swell direction and the conditions, then you choose between one long session or two shorter sessions at different spots. Transport to and from the best breaks, starting from our surf centre in Sagres, is included, as is insurance.
You can bring your own board or rent one from us. Our rental quiver ranges from softboards to performance shortboards and midlengths, with board and wetsuit from 45€ per person for 3 hours.
- Spot selection based on swell and your surf level
- Explanation of local breaks, swell direction and conditions
- 3 hours of guiding: one long session or two
- Transport from the school, local guide and insurance
When to Come
Guided surfing runs from February to June and from September to December. Autumn is a sweet spot on this coast: consistent Atlantic groundswell, water still warm enough for a 3/2 wetsuit and far fewer people on the peaks than in August. Winter brings the biggest and most powerful swells and suits confident surfers.

Is Guiding Right for You?
If you can paddle out on your own, pick and catch unbroken waves and ride along the face, guiding gets you more good waves in less time. Unsure? Read do I need experience for surf guiding?
If you want someone to actually work on your technique, look at our advanced coaching week or a private lesson. For a break-by-break rundown of where we guide, see our main surf guiding page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which parts of the Algarve do you guide?
Normally everything within about 30 minutes of Sagres: the west coast beaches such as Cordoama, Castelejo, Amado, Tonel and Beliche, and south-coast breaks like Mareta and Zavial. On unusual swells we go as far as Arrifana or Bordeira, roughly an hour north, if that is genuinely where the best waves are.
When is surf guiding available?
Guided surfing runs from February to June and from September to December. Those months also bring some of the most consistent swell of the year.
Do I need my own board?
No. You're welcome to bring your own, and if you need equipment, board and wetsuit rental is available from 45€ per person for 3 hours, depending on the board. Let us know when you book.
What level do I need for surf guiding?
You should be an independent surfer: able to paddle out, catch your own waves and handle varied ocean conditions without instruction. If you're not there yet, our surf lessons or advanced coaching week will be a better fit.
How many people can join one guided session?
A session costs 220€ for 1–4 people and 270€ for 5 people, with each extra person +50€. That makes it good value for a group of friends travelling together.
