About 15 minutes from Sagres
Cordoama is the beach we know best. It is a long, cliff-backed stretch of sand west of Vila do Bispo with several sandbanks working at once, which means there is nearly always somewhere to paddle out without sitting on top of anyone else. From June to October our surf school operates directly on the beach.
Praia da Cordoama sits inside the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, and the drive down to it tells you what kind of beach it is: a steep road off the plateau, then a huge west-facing bay framed by dark cliffs with almost nothing built on it. The sand shifts through the year, so the peaks move, but the size of the beach means there is usually a bank doing something. On a small, clean summer morning the inside reforms are as friendly as anywhere in the region. On a solid autumn swell the same beach turns into fast, punchy walls that will humble you.
Because the beach faces almost due west it picks up Atlantic swell very efficiently. That is its blessing and its curse. When the south coast at Lagos is flat, Cordoama will have waves. When a big winter low is sitting off Portugal, Cordoama will have far too many. The useful skill here is reading the size before you commit: anything over about head-high and closing out, and you are better off driving round to the south coast at Mareta.
Wind is the other half of the equation. East and south-east winds are offshore here and groom the faces beautifully — those are the mornings worth setting an alarm for. The prevailing summer northerly is cross-shore and will chop it up as the day heats up, which is why almost everything good at Cordoama happens before about 11am. In the afternoon the wind often wins.
Crowds are rarely the issue. Even in August you can walk five minutes along the sand and have a peak more or less to yourself, which is not something you can say about Tonel. What you should respect instead is the water itself: this is an open Atlantic beach with real power and rip currents that pull along the beach and out through the deeper channels between banks.

Is Cordoama good for beginners?
On small, clean days with a school, yes — the inside reforms are forgiving and there is a lot of space. It is not a beginner beach in every condition though. On a solid west swell Cordoama is genuinely powerful, which is exactly why we move lessons to the south coast when the forecast is too big.
What is the best time of day to surf Cordoama?
Early morning, almost always. The wind is usually light at dawn and the prevailing summer northerly builds through the day, so a beach that looks perfect at 8am can be unsurfable by 2pm.
Is there parking at Praia da Cordoama?
Yes, a free car park sits on the cliff above the beach with a short walk down. It fills up on good summer days, so arrive early.
Are there rip currents at Cordoama?
Yes. Channels between the sandbanks create rips that run out to sea, strongest around low tide on bigger swells. If you get caught in one, paddle across the beach rather than straight back in.
