If there is a wave anywhere in Sagres, there is a wave at Tonel. It sits on the west side of the cape with the fortress on the headland above it, catches swell easily, and is the spot that saves the day when everything else is flat. The trade-off is that everyone knows this.
Tonel is a roughly 500-metre west-facing beach hemmed in by rocky cliffs, with a scattering of rocks around the edges of the bay. It is a beach break, but a powerful one — it can hold a serious size of wave, and on the right day it throws fast, hollow sections and the occasional genuine barrel. That reputation is well earned and it is why you will find the region's better surfers and a contingent of bodyboarders here whenever the swell is up.
Its consistency comes from how exposed it is. Tonel picks up north, north-west and west swell without much effort, so it is the first spot in Sagres to show a wave on a small forecast. The flip side is that it is also among the first to become unsurfable: when a big winter storm swell hits the south-west coast, Tonel goes from good to closing out across the whole bay very quickly.
On small, tidy days Tonel is a genuinely good intermediate wave — quick take-offs, a fast shoulder and enough push to practise on. It is not the place to have your first ever surf. The take-offs are steeper than they look from the car park, there are rocks to be aware of, and clean-up sets arrive without much warning. Low to mid tide is generally the window most people prefer.
Expect company. Tonel is the closest quality wave to town, there is parking, a café and surf schools nearby, and everyone checks it first. Localism is present but manageable if you surf with some awareness — do not paddle straight to the peak, take your turn, and pick a bank away from the main pack if it looks busy.

Can beginners surf at Tonel?
Only when it is genuinely small, and ideally with an instructor. Tonel is a fast, powerful beach break with rocks around the bay and heavy close-out sets. For a first surf we would take you to Mareta on the south coast instead.
Why is Tonel so consistent?
It faces west and sits on an exposed corner of the cape, so it picks up north, north-west and west swell with very little loss. When the rest of the Algarve is flat, Tonel usually still has something rideable.
Is Tonel crowded?
Often, yes. It is the closest good wave to Sagres town, so it is the first place everyone checks. Early mornings midweek are your best chance of space.
When should I avoid Tonel?
When a big storm swell is hitting the south-west coast. Tonel is one of the first spots to close out across the whole bay. On those days head for the sheltered south coast at Mareta, or Beliche.
