Everything you need to plan the perfect surf trip to Sagres — from when to visit and where to stay to booking lessons, eating well and exploring beyond the waves.
Sagres is one of those rare surf destinations where everything lines up: consistent waves, dramatic natural beauty, excellent food, warm water in summer and a laid-back village atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than planned.
Whether you are a complete beginner booking your first ever lesson or an experienced surfer planning a week of guided sessions, this guide covers everything you need to know to make the most of your surf holiday in Sagres.
When to visit Sagres for a surf holiday
Sagres has waves every month of the year, so there is no bad time to visit — only different experiences. Summer (June to September) is perfect for beginners: warm weather, small to medium waves, long days and a buzzing beach atmosphere. Our seasonal Beach Hut at Praia da Cordoama is open daily with walk-in lessons and rentals.
Autumn (October and November) is the sweet spot for intermediate surfers. The Atlantic starts sending consistent groundswells, the water is still warm from summer, and the crowds thin out dramatically. Spring (March to May) offers a similar mix of good waves and empty beaches.
Winter (December to February) brings the biggest swells and is best suited to experienced surfers. Water temperatures drop to around 15°C, but the wave quality can be exceptional.
Where to stay in Sagres
Sagres is a small village, so wherever you stay you will be within a 10-minute drive of the best surf beaches. Options range from budget hostels and surf camps to boutique hotels and luxury villas.
Our surf school is based at Memmo Baleeira Hotel, a four-star hotel overlooking the harbour with a pool, spa and an excellent restaurant. Our Surf & Stay packages bundle accommodation at Memmo Baleeira with daily surf lessons, equipment and breakfast — the easiest way to organise a surf holiday without juggling logistics.
If you prefer something more independent, the village centre has plenty of Airbnbs, guesthouses and a couple of hostels. For families, renting a villa in the surrounding countryside gives you space, privacy and incredible sunset views.
How to book surf lessons
We offer group lessons (ideal for beginners, up to 8 students per instructor), private lessons (for couples, families or anyone who wants focused coaching) and surf guiding (for independent surfers who want local knowledge). Multi-day packages bring the per-lesson price down significantly.
Summer fills up fast, especially in July and August. We recommend booking at least a few days ahead for group lessons and a week ahead for Surf & Stay packages. Contact us directly for the best availability.
Getting to Sagres
The nearest airport is Faro (FAO), about 90 minutes west by car. You can rent a car at the airport — highly recommended, since Sagres is rural and public transport is limited. Some travellers also fly into Lisbon and drive south (3.5 hours), combining the trip with a stop in the Alentejo coast.
A rental car is not strictly necessary if you book our Surf & Stay package, since we include beach transport in our van. But having your own wheels makes it easy to explore the coast, visit nearby Lagos for dinner, or chase waves at different beaches.
Where to eat in Sagres
Sagres punches above its weight for food. A Casinha has incredible seafood platters. A Eira do Mel serves traditional Algarve cooking. Vila Velha is the spot for a special dinner with a wine list. For quick bites between sessions, the cafés at Mareta and the Sagres fortress car park do excellent toasties and fresh juices.
Tipping is not expected in Portugal but leaving 5–10% at sit-down restaurants is appreciated. Most places accept card, but carry some cash for the smaller beach bars.
Things to do between surf sessions
Walk to Cape St. Vincent — the south-westernmost point of mainland Europe — for dramatic cliffs and some of the best sunsets you will ever see. Hike the coastal trails of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. Visit the Sagres Fortress. Take a boat trip to spot dolphins. Rent a mountain bike and explore the trails above Cordoama.
Lagos, a charming harbour town with cobbled streets, restaurants and the famous Ponta da Piedade sea stacks, is just 30 minutes east and makes a great day trip or evening out.
What to pack
We provide all surf equipment — boards, wetsuits, rash vests — so you don't need to bring any gear. Pack reef-safe sunscreen (the Sagres sun is strong even in spring), comfortable shoes for cliff walks, a warm layer for after sunset, and flip-flops for the beach.
If you bring your own board, most airlines allow surfboard bags as sports equipment for a fee. We can store extra boards at our surf centre if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days should I spend in Sagres for a surf holiday?
A minimum of 3–4 days gives you time for a multi-lesson surf course, beach exploration and at least one sunset at Cape St. Vincent. A full week is ideal if you want to combine lessons with day trips and relaxation.
Is Sagres suitable for a non-surfing partner or family?
Absolutely. Sagres has beautiful beaches for swimming and sunbathing, coastal hiking trails, boat trips, great restaurants and Lagos just 30 minutes away. Many couples come with one surfer and one non-surfer and both have an amazing time.
Do I need a car in Sagres?
A rental car is recommended for maximum flexibility. However, if you book a Surf & Stay package, beach transport is included, and the village centre is walkable for restaurants and shops.
