5 Tips to Level Up From Beginner to Intermediate Surfer

10 June 2025 5 min read

You can pop up and ride white water — now what? Five concrete things to focus on to start riding green waves with confidence.

Most surfers get stuck at the same plateau: comfortable in the white water, but struggling to take off on real green waves. Here are five things our coaches focus on every day with intermediate students in Sagres.

1. Paddle technique

Most intermediates underestimate how much paddling matters. A long, deep stroke with high elbows and a steady cadence will get you into more waves and out the back faster — both critical for progression.

2. Wave reading

Spend a session in the water just watching — where is the peak? Which way will it break? Which sets are bigger? Wave reading is what separates an intermediate from a beginner more than any pop-up technique.

3. The angled take-off

Stop popping up straight to the beach. Angle your board down the line as you paddle, point with your front arm where you want to go, and pop up already turning. This single change unlocks green-wave surfing.

4. Board choice

If you're under 75 kg, you don't need a 6'2" performance shortboard yet. A mid-length or a high-volume funboard will catch waves earlier, generate more speed and let you actually do turns.

5. Get coached

Two hours of video coaching can replace months of plateau. Our advanced coaching sessions in Sagres include filming, debrief and concrete drills — the fastest way to genuinely level up.
