Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sagres a good place for complete beginners to learn to surf?

Yes — Sagres is one of the best beginner surf destinations in Europe. With west-facing and south-facing beaches within 10 minutes of each other, our instructors can always pick the calmest, safest beach for your level on the day of your lesson.

Do I need to be fit or know how to swim?

You should be comfortable in waist-deep water and able to swim at least 25 metres. You don't need to be especially fit — beginner lessons happen in shallow white-water where you can stand up. Most of our students are casual holiday-goers, not athletes.

What is the minimum age for a surf lesson?

We teach children from 7 years old in our group lessons, and we run private family lessons for younger kids on request. There is no upper age limit — we regularly teach students in their 60s and 70s.

How big are the waves for a beginner lesson?

Beginner lessons happen in white-water that is usually waist- to chest-high. We never take first-timers into overhead surf — if conditions are too big at one beach, we relocate to a sheltered south coast spot instead.

How long is a beginner surf lesson?

A standard FreeRide beginner lesson lasts around 2 hours: a 20-minute beach briefing and warm-up, then 90 minutes in the water with your instructor. All equipment, wetsuit, transport and insurance are included.

Will I stand up on my first lesson?

Most of our students stand up and ride a wave on their very first lesson. By the third or fourth lesson you'll be linking pop-ups consistently and starting to angle along the wave.
