Two of Portugal's most famous surf towns, two very different vibes. Here's an honest comparison from a Sagres-based surf school.
Sagres and Ericeira are the two most internationally known surf destinations in Portugal. Both are excellent — but they're very different experiences. As a Sagres-based surf school, we'll try to be as fair as possible.
Waves
Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve famous for its high-quality reef breaks: Coxos, Ribeira d'Ilhas, Pedra Branca. Mostly intermediate-to-expert terrain.
Sagres is a beach-break paradise with multiple sandy beaches facing different directions. That makes it dramatically more beginner- and intermediate-friendly, while still serving up serious waves at spots like Tonel, Beliche and the west coast on bigger swells.
Vibe and town
Ericeira is busier, more developed and very surf-fashion oriented. Sagres is wilder, smaller, surrounded by the protected Costa Vicentina natural park, and feels much more 'end of the world'.
If you want nightlife and surf shops on every corner, Ericeira. If you want sunsets at Cape St. Vincent, empty cliffs and a more local feel, Sagres.
Climate and season
Sagres has the most surf-friendly climate in Portugal: mild winters, dry summers and the most consistent swell window of any region. Ericeira is colder in winter and slightly less consistent.
Verdict
Beginner or intermediate? Sagres, every time.
Advanced surfer chasing reef perfection? Ericeira is hard to beat.
Coming for a 1–2 week surf holiday with mixed-level friends or family? Sagres wins on flexibility.
