Surfing in Sagres with Kids: A Family Guide

15 July 2026 7 min read

Planning a family surf trip to the Algarve? Here's everything parents need to know about surfing in Sagres with children — age limits, safety, beaches and what to expect.

Sagres is one of the most family-friendly surf destinations in Europe. The mix of sheltered south-coast beaches for younger children, long sandy beaches for confident kids and a safe, quiet village atmosphere makes it ideal for a family surf holiday.

At FreeRide we teach kids from age seven in our regular group lessons, and we run private family sessions for younger children too. Here is everything parents ask us before booking.

What age can kids start surfing?

We accept children from 7 years old in our group surf lessons. For younger kids (ages 5–6), we offer private family lessons where an instructor works exclusively with your family at a pace that suits everyone.

There is no magic number — it depends on the child's confidence in the water, their swimming ability and how comfortable they are following instructions in a group. If your child can swim 25 metres and is excited about the ocean, they are ready.

Which beaches are best for kids?

Praia da Mareta is our top choice for younger children. It sits on the south coast of Sagres, is sheltered from strong winds and currents, has lifeguards in summer and is walking distance from the village centre. The waves here are smaller and more forgiving than on the west coast.

For kids aged 8 and up who are having surf lessons, we usually head to Praia da Cordoama — our home beach. The inside section has gentle white-water that is perfect for learning, and our Beach Hut is right on the sand for equipment and snacks.

Praia do Martinhal, just east of Sagres, is another excellent family beach — very shallow, calm water, a restaurant nearby and space for building sandcastles between sessions.

What does a family surf lesson look like?

A typical family lesson is a private session lasting about 1.5 to 2 hours. Your instructor starts with a fun beach warm-up, teaches the pop-up technique on the sand, then gets everyone into the shallow white-water.

We use soft-top beginner boards that are safe if they bump into anyone. Each child gets hands-on help in the water — the instructor pushes boards into waves and guides them through the first rides. Most kids stand up on their first or second attempt.

Parents can either surf alongside their children or watch from the beach. Many parents start as spectators and end up booking their own lesson the next day after watching the fun.

Safety and what's included

Every lesson includes a child-sized wetsuit, a soft-top surfboard, transport in our school van, full sports insurance and a certified instructor. We maintain a maximum of 8 students per instructor in group lessons, and family sessions are private.

Our instructors are trained in water safety and first aid. We always choose the calmest, safest beach for the conditions, and if the ocean is too rough for lessons, we reschedule or relocate rather than push through unsafe conditions.

Sunscreen is essential — the Algarve sun is strong even on cloudy days. Apply a generous layer of reef-safe SPF 50 before the lesson and again afterwards. We recommend zinc for faces.

Things to do with kids between surf sessions

Sagres and the surrounding area offer plenty for families. Walk out to Cape St. Vincent and look for the lighthouse. Explore the Sagres Fortress with its giant compass rose. Take a dolphin-watching boat trip from the harbour. Hike short sections of the Fishermen's Trail along the cliffs — the wildflowers in spring are spectacular.

Lagos, 30 minutes east, has the Ciência Viva science centre (great for rainy days), the Ponta da Piedade grottoes accessible by boat, and a lively centre with ice cream shops and gentle marina walks.

For a rest day, the natural pools at Praia dos Estudantes in Lagos or the calm lagoon at Meia Praia make great alternatives to the surf beaches.

Practical tips for families

Book lessons for the morning when kids have the most energy and the wind is usually calmest. Bring water and snacks — the nearest shop to most beaches is a 10-minute drive. Rent a car for maximum flexibility. A villa or apartment with a kitchen saves money on meals and gives everyone space after a day at the beach.

Multi-day packages are the best value. Three lessons over a week gives kids time to rest between sessions and build confidence progressively — much more effective than cramming everything into two days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age for kids' surf lessons in Sagres?

We accept children from 7 years old in group lessons. For kids aged 5–6, we offer private family sessions with a dedicated instructor. Children should be able to swim 25 metres and be comfortable in waist-deep water.

Is it safe for kids to surf in Sagres?

Yes. We choose the calmest, safest beach each day based on conditions. Lessons use soft-top boards, shallow white-water and certified instructors trained in water safety. Full insurance is included.

Can parents surf at the same time as their kids?

Absolutely. In a private family lesson the instructor coaches the whole family together. Alternatively, parents can book separate group lessons while kids have theirs, or watch from the beach.

What if the weather is bad?

We relocate to sheltered beaches if conditions are windy, or reschedule if the ocean is unsafe. Sagres has more than 300 sunny days per year, so weather cancellations are rare — especially in summer.
