Top 5 Surf Beaches Near Sagres for Every Level

One of the biggest advantages of surfing in Sagres is the sheer variety of beaches within a short drive. Facing both west and south, the coastline around Sagres catches swell from almost every direction — and that means there is almost always a wave that matches your level, whatever the day brings.

After more than twenty years of teaching surf in this area, we have a pretty clear picture of which beaches work best for which surfers. Here are our top five, from the most beginner-friendly to the most advanced.

1. Praia da Mareta — best for absolute beginners

Praia da Mareta sits on the south coast of Sagres, right below the village centre. Because it faces south, it is sheltered from the prevailing north winds and picks up much less swell than the west coast beaches. The result: small, gentle waves that are ideal for first-time surfers.

On bigger swell days when the west coast is too powerful for beginners, Mareta is our go-to alternative. The sandy bottom, lifeguard cover and nearby cafés make it a safe, comfortable place to learn. If you are visiting Sagres with young children or nervous first-timers, this is where we will probably take you.

Best conditions: mid-to-high tide, light winds, medium to large west swell (which wraps around and arrives smaller).

2. Praia da Cordoama — best all-rounder for beginners and intermediates

Cordoama is our home beach and the one we use most for surf lessons. It is a long, wide, west-facing sandy beach with multiple peaks spread across nearly a kilometre of coastline. That length means you can almost always find a section that matches your ability.

Beginners surf the gentle white-water on the inside. Intermediates paddle out to the shifting peaks further down the beach. On bigger days, the outside section offers proper performance waves. Our seasonal Beach Hut operates directly on the sand from June through October, with walk-in lessons, rentals and local advice.

Cordoama works in a wide swell range and handles most wind directions except strong onshore westerlies. Low-to-mid tide is generally best. The drive from Sagres is about 10 minutes, and there is a large free car park at the top of the cliff.

3. Praia do Tonel — best intermediate wave in town

Tonel is the most iconic surf spot in Sagres itself, sitting directly below the fortress on the west side of the headland. It picks up every bit of Atlantic swell and produces fast, punchy waves that break over sand and scattered rock.

This is where our intermediate and advanced students come to practise real green-wave surfing. The take-off zone is well-defined, the walls are open for turns, and on clean days the wave quality rivals any beach break in Europe.

Tonel is best at low-to-mid tide with a north or north-east wind. It can get crowded in summer — paddle out early or catch the afternoon glass-off. Not ideal for absolute beginners because the currents are stronger and the waves break with more power.

4. Praia do Castelejo — best for intermediates seeking space

Castelejo is Cordoama's northern neighbour, separated by a dramatic headland. It is slightly more exposed and often a little bigger, with a defined peak near the southern rocks that produces excellent left-handers.

Because it is a few minutes further to drive and has a steeper cliff path, Castelejo is usually less crowded than Cordoama or Tonel. For confident intermediates who want to practise their turns with fewer people around, it is a great option.

The beach also has a restaurant at the top of the cliff serving fresh fish, making it easy to combine a morning surf session with a long lunch overlooking the ocean.

5. Praia do Beliche — best for experienced surfers

Beliche is a small, powerful beach break tucked into the cliffs between Sagres and Cape St. Vincent. It needs a decent swell to start working, but when it does it produces hollow, fast barrels that attract experienced local surfers.

This is not a beginner beach. The take-off is steep, the wave is powerful, and the rip currents can be strong. But if you are an intermediate-to-advanced surfer and the conditions line up, a session at Beliche is one of the best things Sagres has to offer.

Beliche works best at mid-to-high tide with a medium north swell and light easterly winds. Access is via a steep staircase cut into the cliff — worth the walk.
